Some insurance companies do not sell through independent brokers.
It’s fine to reach out to them, but make sure you talk to an independent broker, too. (Someone who is able and incentivized to sell you a policy from one of many insurance companies.)
State Farm, USAA, Northwestern Mutual and TIAA-CREF are examples of companies that don’t sell through independent brokers.
If you want to check their prices, you’ll need to contact one of their employees directly.
One thing to keep in mind: we've heard from clients that some agents of these companies describe themselves as "independent brokers" because some of them are technically allowed to sell policies from other carriers if the client cannot qualify for a policy with their employer. However, it is important to know that they are heavily incentivized (aka "paid a lot more") to sell the products of their employer.
Here at AboveBoard we are an independent insurance brokerage, working with over 30 carriers across life, disability and long-term care insurance policies.
