Marijuana Use and Insurance: Tips for a Smooth Application
Founder & CEO

Marijuana use is quite common - about half of adults report having tried it at some point, and roughly half of those say they've used it within the past year1.

It’s something we help clients navigate regularly when exploring life, disability, or long-term care insurance. While many insurance companies are receptive to applicants who use or have used marijuana, the insurance companies don’t all approach it the same way.

Because guidelines and pricing vary widely by carrier, sharing this information upfront helps us keep the process smooth and find you the best possible outcome.

Below are some key DOs and DON’Ts to help you avoid common pitfalls and move forward with confidence.

DOs

DO be upfront with your broker before you apply
Many carriers are very receptive about marijuana, but their guidelines for pricing vary widely. If your broker knows your usage details, they can match you with the carrier most likely to offer your best rate.

DO ask questions before you apply
Not sure if your experience even counts? Tried a gummy once when it became legal? Unsure how to think about frequency? These are common questions, and we’re happy to help you figure out what’s worth disclosing and what isn’t.

DON’Ts

DON’T leave your broker in the dark
If marijuana use comes up for the first time during a carrier interview -- or appears in medical records unexpectedly—it can slow down your application, result in worse pricing or even get you declined for coverage. Sharing early helps avoid unnecessary back-and-forth.

DON’T say you’ve never used marijuana if you have used recently
If your paramedical exam or medical records show recent use, this can raise red flags and hurt your application, not just with the carrier you applied to, but others in the future.

DON’T overstate your usage in a formal interview
Sometimes, people recall a one-off event (like a bachelor or bachelorette party weekend) and report a wide range (e.g., “0 to 4 times per week”) instead of their true, typical pattern. Carriers are looking for your normal habits, not isolated events or your lifetime maximum. Overstating can make you look riskier than you are.

Bottom line

If you’re applying for life, disability, or long-term care insurance and have any history of marijuana use, a quick conversation with your broker can make the process easier -- and often improve the outcome. Our role is to help you present your situation honestly, clearly, and in the best possible light.

And if you’re still exploring options, you can start by getting quotes for life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance.
